General overview of the role

A Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring programs that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within an organization. They work to create a workplace culture that embraces differences, fosters inclusivity, and ensures equitable treatment for all employees. This role involves analyzing workforce data, educating teams on D&I principles, and collaborating with leadership to ensure policies and practices reflect a commitment to diversity. D&I Specialists play a key role in promoting an inclusive environment and improving employee engagement and retention.

Typical duties and responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategies, programs, and initiatives to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the organization.
  • Collaborate with leadership to ensure policies, procedures, and practices are inclusive and support underrepresented groups.
  • Conduct training sessions and workshops on topics such as unconscious bias, cultural competence, and inclusive leadership.
  • Analyze workforce data to identify trends, disparities, and opportunities for improvement in diversity and inclusion.
  • Act as a resource for employees, providing support and guidance on D&I issues and fostering an inclusive work environment.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of D&I initiatives and report progress to leadership.
  • Partner with recruitment teams to attract and retain diverse talent through inclusive hiring practices.
  • Collaborate with Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) to support diversity goals and enhance employee engagement.

Required skills and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in a diversity and inclusion role or related HR function.
  • Strong understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles and practices.
  • Experience developing and implementing D&I initiatives and programs in a corporate or organizational setting.
  • Ability to analyze data and generate reports on diversity metrics and progress.
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills for delivering training and workshops.
  • Experience in conflict resolution, fostering understanding and resolution in diverse workplace scenarios.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams and influencing organizational change.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships across diverse groups.
  • Familiarity with employment laws and regulations related to diversity and inclusion.
