General overview of the role

A Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) is responsible for designing, developing, and executing automated tests to ensure the quality and performance of software applications. They work closely with development teams to understand application features and define effective testing strategies that align with project goals. SDETs create and maintain testing frameworks, perform code reviews, and implement best practices for test automation. They play a vital role in identifying defects, ensuring adherence to quality standards, and optimizing testing processes. This role is essential in driving quality assurance in both functional and non-functional aspects of software, contributing to faster and more reliable product releases.

Typical duties and responsibilities

1. Design, develop, and execute automated test cases using programming languages like Java, Python, C#, or Ruby.
2. Develop and maintain test automation frameworks and tools to support continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) pipelines.
3. Collaborate with software development teams to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve bugs and performance issues in both functional and non-functional areas of software.
4. Ensure comprehensive test coverage by writing and implementing test strategies, plans, and scripts for various testing levels (unit, integration, system, acceptance, etc.).
5. Identify and document test scenarios, and implement regression tests to verify new features and bug fixes.
6. Execute both manual and automated tests as needed, particularly for exploratory or edge-case testing.
7. Analyze and report test results, track software defects, and provide actionable feedback to development teams.
8. Develop load, stress, and performance testing scripts to ensure software scalability.
9. Integrate testing into DevOps workflows, ensuring continuous testing throughout the software development lifecycle and enabling rapid feedback on code changes.
10. Contribute to continuous process improvements in testing methodologies, tools, and techniques.

Required skills and experience

• Proficiency in one or more programming languages (e.g., Java, Python, C#, Ruby).
• Experience in developing automated test scripts and frameworks (e.g., Selenium, Appium, JUnit, TestNG).
• Solid understanding of software development life cycle (SDLC) and QA methodologies.
• Experience with continuous integration tools such as Jenkins, Bamboo, or TeamCity.
• Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git, SVN) and build tools (e.g., Maven, Gradle).
• Experience with API testing and RESTful services.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
• Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
• 3+ years of experience in software testing and automation.

Nice to have/preferred skills and experience (not required)

• Experience with performance and security testing.
• Familiarity with behavior-driven development (BDD) or test-driven development (TDD) practices.
• Experience with containerization tools like Docker and Kubernetes.
• Knowledge of cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Experience with mobile automation testing tools (e.g., Appium).
• Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with development teams.
• Experience in agile development environments with tools like JIRA or Confluence.
