General overview of the role

Responsible for designing, implementing, and managing the organization’s cloud security architecture, Cloud Security Architect ensures the security of cloud-based systems and data through continuous monitoring, assessment, and improvement. This specialist develops security strategies, enforces security policies, and collaborates with other IT teams to address potential vulnerabilities.

Typical duties and responsibilities

1. Design and implement secure cloud architectures for various cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
2. Develop and enforce security policies and procedures for cloud environments.
3. Conduct security assessments and audits of cloud infrastructure and applications.
4. Collaborate with IT and development teams to integrate security into cloud-based projects and deployments.
5. Monitor and respond to security incidents and threats in the cloud environment.
6. Provide guidance and training on cloud security best practices to internal teams.
7. Conduct detailed risk assessments of cloud environments, including the evaluation of security controls for third-party services, and implement risk mitigation strategies based on threat modeling and vulnerability analysis.
8. Stay updated with emerging security threats, technologies, and trends to continuously improve cloud security strategies and architecture.

Required skills and experience

• Minimum 3 years of prior experience in information security, with a focus on cloud security architecture.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or a related field.
• Proficiency with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
• Good understanding of network security, identity and access management, and encryption technologies.
• Knowledge of security frameworks and standards (such as NIST ISO 27001).
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a proven track record in identifying complex security issues, analyzing data, and implementing effective solutions to enhance cloud security.
• Experience with security tools such as SIEM (Security Information and Event Management), IDS/IPS (Intrusion Detection/Prevention Systems), and vulnerability scanners, including hands-on expertise in deploying, configuring, and managing these tools to safeguard networks and systems.
• Proficiency in automation tools like Terraform, Ansible, and Jenkins, demonstrating the ability to automate cloud infrastructure deployment, configuration management, and CI/CD processes to ensure robust security practices.
• Skills in programming/scripting languages such as Python and Bash.
• Incident response experience, including managing cloud security incidents, conducting forensic analysis, and implementing remediation strategies.

Nice to have/preferred skills and experience (not required)

• Relevant certifications including AWS Certified Security—Specialty, Microsoft Certified: Azure Security Engineer Associate, or Google Professional Cloud Security Engineer.
• Familiarity with NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) and OWASP (Open Web Application Security Project) standards, including their guidelines and best practices for securing cloud environments and web applications.
• Experience in cloud penetration testing, including identifying and assessing security vulnerabilities in cloud infrastructure, applications, and services through simulated attacks to strengthen security measures.
• Knowledge of regulatory requirements and compliance frameworks like GDPR, HIPAA, and PCI-DSS.
• Familiarity with designing and implementing Zero Trust security models in cloud environments to enhance security posture by enforcing strict identity verification and least-privilege access controls.
