General overview of the role

The DevOps Engineer is a critical member of the tech team, responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining scalable, reliable, and secure infrastructure in a multi-cloud environment. This role focuses on bridging the gap between software development and IT operations, ensuring seamless deployment, monitoring, and management of services and applications. The DevOps Engineer will collaborate closely with development teams to optimize CI/CD pipelines, automate infrastructure provisioning, and enhance platform observability. The DevOps Engineer plays a huge role in driving continuous improvement in the development process, including promoting automation, reducing manual processes, and enhancing deployment speed. This position requires a deep understanding of cloud technologies, containerization, and infrastructure-as-code, as well as a proactive approach to problem-solving in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Typical duties and responsibilities

1. Architect, design, and develop scalable services supporting high-traffic consumer-facing applications, particularly those involving user interactions typical of a social network.
2. Increase platform observability by instrumenting Grafana metrics, configuring alert policies, and setting up incident reporting dashboards.
3. Devise and execute migration and consolidation strategies for databases and persistent tiers, including Firebase, MongoDB, and Redis clusters.
4. Take ownership of the infrastructure hosting machine learning data pipelines and embedding databases, ensuring high availability and performance.
5. Collaborate with development teams to architect, implement, and manage scalable and dependable systems, including CI/CD pipelines for seamless deployment.
6. Manage and oversee the on-call process, including scheduling, supporting critical incidents, and creating robust disaster recovery plans.
7. Design and deploy scalable, highly available, and fault-tolerant systems across multiple cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP).
8. Migrate existing on-premises applications to multi-cloud platforms, ensuring minimal downtime and compatibility.
9. Select appropriate cloud services based on compute, data, and security requirements, optimizing performance and cost.
10. Implement and manage API Gateway solutions to securely and efficiently route requests between clients and microservices, optimizing API performance for low latency and high availability.
11. Provide technical support and governance related to cloud architectures, deployment, and operations, ensuring adherence to best practices.
12. Develop automation scripts and workflows using Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation to enable consistent and efficient resource provisioning.
13. Implement orchestration strategies to streamline deployment and management processes across multiple clouds.

Required skills and experience

• Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure and scalable services, with hands-on experience in deploying and maintaining high-availability distributed systems.
• Proficiency in containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation).
• Experience with monitoring, observability, and alerting tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, and Datadog, with a focus on performance tuning and incident management.
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines, automating infrastructure deployments, and managing version control and configuration management tools.
• Experience with automation tools like Ansible or Chef.
• Familiarity with database management and migration strategies for systems such as Firebase, MongoDB, and Redis.
• Proven ability to implement security and compliance best practices in a cloud-based environment.
• Strong collaboration skills, with experience working closely with engineering teams to ensure platform reliability and scalability during periods of rapid growth.
• Excellent problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to identifying and addressing issues before they impact performance.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

• Experience with multi-cloud deployments and orchestration tools.
• Knowledge of advanced security practices, such as zero-trust architecture and encryption techniques.
• Experience with emerging technologies such as GitOps (e.g., using ArgoCD) or Kubernetes operators.
• Familiarity with machine learning and data pipeline management in cloud environments.
• Certifications in cloud platforms (e.g., AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, Google Cloud Professional DevOps Engineer).
• Experience with serverless architecture and microservices.
