General overview of the role

A Reliability Engineer is a specialized professional focused on ensuring that systems, products, and processes consistently perform their intended functions without failure. Their primary goal is to enhance the reliability and availability of products while reducing costs associated with repairs, downtime, and inefficiencies. Reliability Engineers apply engineering, mathematics, and statistical analysis principles to identify potential failures, assess risks, and implement solutions.

Typical duties and responsibilities

1. Perform reliability modeling and analysis using statistical methods to predict failure rates and improve system reliability.
2. Collect, process, and analyze system performance and reliability data, including failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA).
3. Design and implement reliability tests (e.g., accelerated life tests, environmental tests) to validate products’ durability and performance.
4. Conduct root cause analysis for failures, developing corrective and preventive actions to mitigate future issues.
5. Work closely with cross-functional teams (engineering, manufacturing, quality assurance) to incorporate reliability principles in product design and development.
6. Prepare and present reliability reports to stakeholders, highlighting key findings, trends, and actionable recommendations.
7. Establish reliability metrics and continuously monitor product performance in the field; recommend improvements based on findings.
8. Maintain clear and detailed records of all reliability analysis, test setups, and protocols.
9. Provide guidance and training to teams on reliability best practices and methodologies.
10. Ensure all reliability engineering processes comply with relevant industry standards and regulations.

Required skills and experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, etc.) or related field.
• Strong analytical skills with proficiency in reliability analysis tools and software.
• Proficient in statistical tools and methodologies (e.g., Weibull analysis, Six Sigma, statistical sampling).
• Experience with design for reliability (DfR) principles and reliability testing methods.
• Strong problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills to identify and resolve issues effectively.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
• Familiarity with project management principles and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Proficiency in reliability software (e.g., ReliaSoft, Minitab) and general office applications (Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint).

Nice to have/preferred skills and experience (not required)

• Master’s degree in Engineering or related field.
• Professional certifications in reliability engineering (e.g., Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE), Certified Quality Engineer (CQE)).
• Experience within specific industries (e.g., aerospace, automotive, electronics) where reliability standards are particularly stringent.
• Familiarity with programming languages (e.g., Python, R) for data analysis and automation of reliability testing.
• Familiarity with reliability standards and best practices (e.g., MIL-STD-781, ISO 9001).
• Understanding of software reliability concepts and contributing to products with software components.
• Knowledge of lean manufacturing techniques and their application in reliability improvements.
• Experience in leading reliability projects or teams.
